Romeo y Julieta Churchill Reserva

When I first tasted the Romeo y Julieta Churchill Reserva late Feb 2012 they did not really please me. Bland, with a lack of flavour, almost boring, mono-dimensional and thus only very average they were. These and similar expressions I did hear all over the show and I was seriously surprised about these Havanas as cigars released under the RESERVA label are supposed to be top notch.

One reason for the misfortunate encounter could have been the short period of time between production and the inaugural tasting – like that our Churchills could not rest a bit to show their true potential.

It took another year until they finally started hitting the markets around the globe. Good move to hold them back so long as now we see a totally different cigar to the one we had a year ago. The Romeo Churchill Reserva finally shows great fragrance, is subtle, fine and elegant – and just a perfect example of this benchmark Havana cigar. They will be available in lacquered boxes of 20 cigars.

Whisky and Cigars

Whisky-probe_schobert_230

They are a perfect pairing - great Single Malts from Scotland and Cuban cigars. Now, it is somewhat a challenge to sample some drams of Scotch and a couple of Havana on a sunday afternoon. The Whisky tasting was hosted by famous Prof. Walter Schobert, who guided us through two flights of 3 excellent Single Malts.

Schobert, who moved to the Scotish Island of Islay 14 years ago (home of such legendary Whiskies as Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Bruichladdich, Bunnahabhain, Laphroaig and the new Kilchoman Distillerie, to name a few) explained about the ongoing changes in the Scottish Whisky Industrie while we worked our way through the flights. “We are facing dramatic changes in the world of Single Malt Whisky” said Prof.Schobert, referring about the giantic markets in India and China that recently started importing enormous quantities of Whiskies, both blended ones like Johnny Walker and Single Malts across the board, incl such big names as Macallan, Glenfarclas, Glenfiddich and others)

The new players on the world market will cause a shortage of Whiskies - and that will lead to less and less bottles stating the age of the product. First distillers have changed their portfolio as they now offer Single Malts with no further hint about the products age. “If you are a passionate Single Malt drinker it’s high time to stock up your favorites” Prof. Schobert concluded a memorable tasting - surrounded by blue smoke of finest Partagas an Upmann cigars.

More on Trinidad…..

We have posted some news about the discontinuation of Trinidad - and that has caused a lot of discussions. Even though we have been informed personally about what we have posted two days ago the NOW offical statement is, that Reyes, Coloniales and Fundadores will not be discontinued but only the other sizes such as Robusto T and Robusto Extra. Sales figures are just too bad to justify a further production. Always good to see more news from Havana every day. Stay tuned for more

Juan Lopez Distinguidos Jar

Jldistinguido

When released in autum last year the 2011 German Regional Edition Juan Lopez Distinguidos were sold out in 48 hrs - something we have not seen before.

Thankfully our Importer, 5th Avenue Products Trading, kept a few of these magnificent cigars aside. These last ones will be released in stunning Porcelain Jars with 25 cigars each.

We now accept reservations for these few jars that will be priced just under 400 Euro (according to the Importer) - just klick the image for more. As always charges will only be processed when we actually ship.

Stay tuned for more smoky news:-)

Trinidad cigar brand discontinued

Habanos S.A., Cubas cigar monopole, recently took the decision to discontinue the production of the Trinidad cigar line. But, it will not be the end!

When these high priced cigars were launched for public sale back in 1997 the brand consisted of only one cigar - the famous Fundadores ( 40 by 192mm). Shortly after these were available Cubas “dark years” in cigar production began and specifically almost 75% of the thin ring gauged cigars were plugged. Demand on these 38-40 ring cigars dropped to almost zero - just an understandable market reaction. Without causing too much noise back then the Fundadores was taken off production. Stocks sitting at importers warehouses did last until the line was re-launched in the early 2000’s. Some new sizes (Vitolas) were added, the entire line then made at Francisco Donatien cigar factory in Pinar del Rio, a new design, more new Vitolas, extensive quality control and finest tobacco blends then became corner stones of the legendary brand besides Cohiba - but sales were never up to par.

Now, considering the blend of any of the Trinidad cigars is excellent, the draw without equal and the presentation outstanding there is only one reason why the market never really accepted the brand as such - the nasty price tag. Consumers around the globe bought Cohibas instead and left these Trinidads sitting on the shelf.

The decision subsequently taken by Habanos S.A. is good. Let the “old Trinidad” cigar line rest in peace. In a distant future we will most likely see a second re-launch of this famous brand which then might follow the corner stones of the old line combined with new Vitolas and hopefully a very moderate price tag. Those loving the current Trindads shall stock up quickly - stocks will not last forever.

La Corona Cigar Factory

Rodolfo
When tasting the current production I had a chance to catch up with Rodolfo Beltrán, head of La Coronas quality control. He is not only a highly respected cigar roller and blend master but also a close friend since many years. Currently La Corona produces a wide range of Havana cigars incl. such famous cigars as the Cohiba Siglo Line. As a side note let me mention that along with a cigar tasting in Havana the odd glass of rum is a must (to rinse the palate)
