New Havana cigars for 2014

Every year Habanos S.A., the Cuban cigar monopoly, discontinues production of a variety of cigars. That certainly generates capacity to launch new products which reflect new markets and their changing demands. As you might recall in the recent past almost every Cervantes/ Lonsdale sized Havana has been eliminated from the portfolio as worldwide demand for 42 ring gauged cigars is declining whereas bigger rings became more and more popular. Now, this is what is coming out as new releases in 2014

Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo de San Juan - 150mm by 54 - in Cabs of 25, 10 and tubos

Partagas Serie D No. 6 - 90mm by 50 - Cabs of 20 and 5Packs

Trinidad Vigia - 110mm by 54 - Cabs of 12 and tubos

Romeo y Julieta Julieta - 120mm by 33 - box of 25

Quintero Petit Quintero - 105mm by 43 - bundles of 25

Romeo y Julieta Cedros de Luxe - 140mm by 50 - boxes of 10 - LCDH ONLY

Por Larrañaga Picadores No.1 - 127mm by 48

H. Upmann No. 2 Reserva Cosecha 2010 - 156mm by 52 - boxes of 20 - Limited to 5000 boxes

Cohiba Robustos Supremos EL 2014 - 127mm by 55 - boxes of 10

Partagas Seleccion Privada EL 2014 - 160mm by 50- boxes of 10

German TV about Havanas in Hamburg

In the past years we have noticed that cigar smoking (and of course smoking in general) has been the main subject of discussions around the globe. Even in Havana I remember being forced to smoke outside some years ago - funny enough that at least in Cuba these stupid laws that force cigar lovers to smoke outside have been ignored in some way. Now, in this context I consider it as remarkable that German TV station NDR shows a crispy and short trailer about the POSITIVE aspects of Cigar Smoking. Even though it is (of course) in German language you will enjoy the nice pictures and the very teasing atmophere caputed in THIS TRAILER about Havanas in Hamburg (3 Minutes)

Enjoy this - and happy smoking from Hamburg

Habanos discountinues production of various cigars

We know this since years - unpopular cigars and cigars not selling in sufficient quantities are taken off productionby the Cuban state monopole Habanos S.A.. Sometimes it’s nothing that makes the cigar community cry - but in some cases the discontinuation is hard to understand, to say the least. See what will be eliminated this year:

  1. Cohiba Lanceros in pack of 5
  2. Cuaba Diademas
  3. Cuaba Generosos
  4. Upmann Magnum 46 in Cab of 50
  5. Upmann Magnum 50 in Cab of 50
  6. Hoyo Epicure Especial in Cab of 50
  7. Hoyo des Dieux in Cab of 25
  8. Hoyo du Gourmet in Cab of 25
  9. Jose Pieda Nacionales in packs of 5 and bundles of 25
  10. Juan Lopez Petit Coronas
  11. Juan Lopez Seleccion No.2 in Cab of 50
  12. La Gloria Cubana Inmensos (!)
  13. La Gloria Cubana Medaille d’Or No. 2
  14. Monte No. 3 in packs of 3
  15. Monte Tubos
  16. Partagas 8-9-8 in bxs of 10
  17. Partagas Coronas Junior Tubos in packs of 3
  18. Quai d’Orsay Imperiales
  19. Romeo Exhibicion No.3
  20. Saint Luis Rey Double Coronas
  21. Saint Luis Rey Serie A
  22. San Cristobal El Moro

So far no need to comment this. In a very near future we will not have any Cabs of 50 left as over the past years they have been eliminated step by step.

However, happy smoking from sunniest Hamburg

Romeo y Julieta Churchill Reserva

When I first tasted the Romeo y Julieta Churchill Reserva late Feb 2012 they did not really please me. Bland, with a lack of flavour, almost boring, mono-dimensional and thus only very average they were. These and similar expressions I did hear all over the show and I was seriously surprised about these Havanas as cigars released under the RESERVA label are supposed to be top notch.

One reason for the misfortunate encounter could have been the short period of time between production and the inaugural tasting – like that our Churchills could not rest a bit to show their true potential.

It took another year until they finally started hitting the markets around the globe. Good move to hold them back so long as now we see a totally different cigar to the one we had a year ago. The Romeo Churchill Reserva finally shows great fragrance, is subtle, fine and elegant – and just a perfect example of this benchmark Havana cigar. They will be available in lacquered boxes of 20 cigars.

Whisky and Cigars

Whisky-probe_schobert_230

They are a perfect pairing - great Single Malts from Scotland and Cuban cigars. Now, it is somewhat a challenge to sample some drams of Scotch and a couple of Havana on a sunday afternoon. The Whisky tasting was hosted by famous Prof. Walter Schobert, who guided us through two flights of 3 excellent Single Malts.

Schobert, who moved to the Scotish Island of Islay 14 years ago (home of such legendary Whiskies as Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Bruichladdich, Bunnahabhain, Laphroaig and the new Kilchoman Distillerie, to name a few) explained about the ongoing changes in the Scottish Whisky Industrie while we worked our way through the flights. “We are facing dramatic changes in the world of Single Malt Whisky” said Prof.Schobert, referring about the giantic markets in India and China that recently started importing enormous quantities of Whiskies, both blended ones like Johnny Walker and Single Malts across the board, incl such big names as Macallan, Glenfarclas, Glenfiddich and others)

The new players on the world market will cause a shortage of Whiskies - and that will lead to less and less bottles stating the age of the product. First distillers have changed their portfolio as they now offer Single Malts with no further hint about the products age. “If you are a passionate Single Malt drinker it’s high time to stock up your favorites” Prof. Schobert concluded a memorable tasting - surrounded by blue smoke of finest Partagas an Upmann cigars.

More on Trinidad…..

We have posted some news about the discontinuation of Trinidad - and that has caused a lot of discussions. Even though we have been informed personally about what we have posted two days ago the NOW offical statement is, that Reyes, Coloniales and Fundadores will not be discontinued but only the other sizes such as Robusto T and Robusto Extra. Sales figures are just too bad to justify a further production. Always good to see more news from Havana every day. Stay tuned for more
